We are back after a short break during the holiday period, on Episode 38 we have Gordon White, half of birthday boy Kyle Murdoch, Kirsty Hunter and Iain Murray for some lively discussion and the usual measure of banter and disagreement!

We start with a chat about Google+ - could this be something that Iain and Gordon agree on? - You need to listen to find out! We explore what Google+ is and who is it competing with and, is it one major social media platform too many?

Facebook has also undergone some major changes since the last podcast so we look at what's new here and what we can expect in the near future. This discussion also questions how good, or bad, the big 4 (Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In and Google) are at actually communicating with their users - your thought son this would be much appreciated.

Other topics we explore along the way include:
Social Media in the workplace - are attitudes changing?
Iain confesses he's finding weaknesses with Android
Apple's customer service - is it the best you can get?
Steve Jobs and his retirement - Can he be replaced?
What's next for Apple?
App Stores - Are there too many around?
Widgets vs Icons
Coca-Cola's Facebook Fan Page was not originally set up by Coca-Cola which leads us to chat about the difficulty brands are having with talking to their end users for the first time.
IKEA's new television advert and how it is part of a campaign that includes some very clever YouTube/Facebook promotion
QR Codes and their increasing popularity as predicted by Social Media Podcast 140 years ago!

We also give a big thanks to CC Chapman for the fantastic video introduction for the last New Media Breakfast and also to Jennifer Holloway for the first of her guest posts on the fatBuzz Blog.

Finally, we take a look at some Apps that have caught our eye including: Press Reader, News360, Nova, Optiscan, CatchNotes, Zinio and TouchNote.

Let me say from the outset that we made a cardinal error with this podcast - Gordon White, Kyle Murdoch and Iain Murray all gathered to record this episode at the appointed time, sat down to discuss (very roughly) what we would talk about then discovered no one had brought the recorder! Fear not, fatBuzz usually find a fix for such problems and we actually recorded it via one of our large Sony cameras.

The edition does tend to focus a lot of Facebook; largely because we had just completed three "Facebook for Business" New Media Breakfast in the preceding six days! In that period we had all attended the Entrepreneurial Exchange Conference at Gleneagles where much of the speaker's content was about the use of social media in their businesses.

We also discuss the relevancy of your community and the need to develop a following that is relevant to your business and, the usefulness of Twitter and Facebook Lists.

We talk about a couple of influential social media business people, Michelle Mone of Ultimo and Richard McKay of Richard McKay flooring.

Other subjects include:
Tommy Sheridan blogging from jail (But now he isn't!!!)
Groupon's timing on going to the market
Glasgow's Great Deal and Edinburgh's Great Deal
Facebook Deals
Facebook Sponsored Stories
The diabolically bad Facebook Mobile Platforms
QR Codes - Mitch Joel's blog about how they can create a negative experience for a brand
Gaynor MacIntyre of MacIntyre's of Edinburgh and her QR Code
WAZE - An application for traffic management using Geo-Tagging and Twitter
Cloud Computing, Apple iCloud, DropBox, Google Cloud etc.
Two Boys Opera and the viral video - Can I be Your Friend?
Personal Branding Online with Jennifer Holloway

Edition 36 - Sallie Goetsch...the boxing referee

Social Media Podcast No.36 is slightly longer than the usual podcast but, well worth listening to. Following Social Media Podcast No.34 (The boxing edition), Sallie Goetsch contacted us about the stats Iain and I were using to argue the case about Andriod vs iOS, she was concerned that we were not comparing like for like so, we invited her to explain. In Social Media Podcast we enjoy some light hearted banter about the arguement and Sallie explains the difficulty with statistics and why we should beware who is presenting them.

We also took the opportunity to have a conversation with Sallie about her work and some social media related issues, during the chat we discussed the following:
The power of podcasting as a communication tool
Sallie's forthcoming podcast workshop
Audioboo and other "simple" ways to podcast
The deterioration of the English language, bad grammar and people's fear of writing
I'm sure you'll find the conversation extremely interesting with a suitable balance of fun and serious commentary. Following the interview I also comment on something that Sallie does very well and others do very badly; deciding when something should be said off-line as opposed to on-line.

To help you identify Sallie and myself, the voice in stereo is Sallie's and mine is in mono (basically becuase I'm stupid and didn't check the settings on the recording tool I downloaded minutes before Sallie and I recorded the podcast!!!) My apologies.

The usual team of Kyle Murdoch, Iain Murray and myself (Gordon White) then go on to discuss a range of topics from the world of social media including the following:
Telstra's social media training progress
Social Media Policies - Link to examples on www.socialmediagovernance.com
The rising popularity of QR Codes (Quick Response Codes) and how fatBuzz use Kimtag as a single QR Code linked to all of our on-line places
Personal branding and the importance of your reputation online - Link to www.reputation.com
The forthcoming New Media Breakfast on Personal Branding with Jennifer Holloway
EBay Shops - Does a 100% positive feedback rating add to the sales value of your EBay store?
These are some of the main things we chat about dueing the podcast. In addition, we mention Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Cloud, LoveFilm, Audible.com and, Silverlight.

We also refer to a very useful piece of research conducted by Buddy Media which is available as a pdf download on Mashable - Facebook Engagement Data

Finally, we leave the podcast with an invitation to take a look at the latest marketing campaign from Range Rover for the new Ramge Rover Evoque. We intend to discuss this on the next podcast so, please take a moment to have a look and make a comment about it before we record Social Media Podcast 37.

In Social Media Podcast Gordon White and Kyle Murdoch from fatBuzz are joined by Iain Murray or Europa Services and Tim Barlow and Joel Lumsden of Attacat for a lively discussion about the latest news from the world of social media.

During our chat we examine the new Motorola Xoom and inevitably compare it to the new iPad 2 and during that discussion we talk about the absence of other players in the market, particularly Microsoft.

Following this we look at a whole host of subjects with the usual light hearted banter; subjects include the popularity of Twitter, Paper.li and an interesting introduction to Storify. Microsoft also come under fire for their attempt at Quick Response codes and we ask if Google +1 is just the latest attempt by Google to get into Social Media.

The Social Media Podcast would be incomplete without the latest chat about Facebook so, we touch on their continued dominance, the new Facebook Questions and, controlling the News Feed. During this chat we also look at other social media sites like Wayne's World and ask if any of these can really make any dent in the popularity of Facebook.

On the App front, we look at BA's (British Airways) new App for Executive Club members and Tripit.

As usual, the podcast is rounded off with an update about the New Media Breakfast when we bring you details of the next three breakfasts in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

In Edition No.33 we are joined by a couple of guests, Tim Barlow and Kiril Bunin of Attacat. We recorded this podcast immediately after the New Media Breakfast in Glasgow on Friday 25th March. Kiril was the presenter at the breakfast and he delivered an extremely interesting and informative presentation on Conversion Rate Optimisation. Such was the quality of the information, most attendees seemed to be hot footing it back to the office to review the user experience on their web sites.

On the podcast we discuss lots of new things - the new iPad gets the thumbs down, Iain Murray has a new job, the Oxford Dictionary has some new words...we even discuss a new Bride - more about that when you listen to the podcast.

We talk about Crowd Sourcing, Coca Cola, Maroon 5, Gold Corp, Lynx new advert, Foursquare, Twestival, Twitter's 5th Birthday, Facebook Places, Cupcakes, Facebook Sponsored Stories and much more.

Kiril chats to us about his presentation and the importance of Conversion Rate Optimisation and, we talk about the need to get CEO's and senior management to 'buy in' to social media and how organisations who's top management have bought in are succeeding with social media.

Edition 26 is a live recording from the 1st Anniversary of the New Media Breakfast. The event was "Question Time" style with a panel of 5 answering questions from the floor and, question sent in via Twitter, Facebook and email.

Our panel included:
Valerie Surgenor, Senior Associate, MacRoberts LLP
Ben Rogers, Operations & Business Development Director, Attacat
Belinda Roberts, Managing Director, Winning Entrepreneurs
Gordon McIntyre-Kemp Managing Director, Intelligise
Gary Ennis Managing Director, NS Design
Gordon White took the Chairman role for the event.

We had a range of questions on a variety of subjects including the following:

Can you explain the difference in my rights as a blog owner if I elect for a moderated or unmoderated blog?

And, what defines a moderated blog? Is a blog deemed to be moderated if:
• I choose to approve comments before they are posted
• I use a spam filter
• I delete offensive or, irrelevant posts

We are seeing more and more video online. Will this eventually overtake the written word and how can we stay ahead of the game with videos online?

What is the panel's advice for getting more people to view your video content?

Is it possible to have a meaningful social media presence using just one platform? If so, which one?

As a Non Executive Director of Scotland's largest Children's Charity Aberlour Childcare Trust we are working with fatBuzz to embrace and embed Social Media across our 47 locations in Scotland. What ideas do the panel have to help third sector organisations such as Aberlour get there opportunities, events and needs across to potential Staff, Volunteers, Individual Donors, Corporate Sponsors and Trusts?

Can you offer any guidelines about what proportion of your marketing budget should be spent on social media?

What content aggregator tools are available to assist with gathering and monitoring content?

Does the arrival of Google Instant require any radical amendments to my search marketing strategy?
